A journey paralleled

The entire adoption process seems so foreign to most of our traditional family planning friends. No one is quite sure how to react to the news since nothing about adoption is like carrying and birthing a child. Or is it?
This is how I have chosen to look at each of our adoption journeys. I can't say this is true for everyone but for what it's worth ...
Being matched with an expectant mother is our positive pregnancy test. At this point your stomach does flips and you want to tell everyone you know, yet the more logical part of your brain says it's too soon and just like in pregnancy things could go wrong.
The waiting period here is similar.
You and your significant other build confidence in the match as time goes by just as an expectant mother builds confidence in the permanency of her pregnancy as milestones are reached.
Finally family is told the joyous news! It's okay to get excited here people and you should! For just like in traditional family planning nothing is certain up until and even after birth. Choose to have faith.
The baby is born. Just as in all childbirth situations we pray for a positive outcome and trust that God has a plan. Sometimes it's in line with your plans and sometimes it's not.
Sometimes adopted parents, just like biological parents, leave the hospital with the child they intended and sometimes they don't.
When they don't the grief is the same. It is a child lost. It is a future lost. It is a prayer and a dream that will need to wait for another day.
If you are blessed to be included in an adoption journey please don't shy away. Be inclusive. For this family, adoption is their traditional family planning. It's their only family planning. It's their positive pregnancy test!
Love with them. Rejoice with them. Have faith with them.
In Gods timing the outcome will be worth it all.
